City Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Members of the Kerman American Legion Post Honor Guard raise the flag as ceremonies began April 29
The Kerckhoff Park Scout Hut housed historical exhibits and a video presentation of Kerman's history.

Fresno County Supervisor Phil Larson (left) was on hand to say a few words as the ceremony kicked off, along with Kerman Mayor Ken Moore.

Lottie and Olen White were recognized for their efforts in putting together the historical exhibits.

Ruby Dhaliwal, Mayor of San Joaquin, was also on hand to welcome visitors to the event.

The Kerman Community Band played several selections.

The Punjabi Sahit Sabha folk dancers were among seveal groups who performed during the day.

Other ethinic groups performing included Danish dancers (above), Portuguese and Mexican folk dancing.

The Kerman Police Dept. DARE car, antique vehicles and North Central's prize restored fire engine were also on display.

Youngsers enjoyed the day with rides and old fashioned games.
Kerman marked its 100th birthday Saturday, April 29, with celebrations in Kerckhoff Park. The event will also marked the 60th year since Kerman’s ‘incorporation’ as an official city in Fresno County. The celebration kicked off at mid-morning, with events and activities throughout the day, including: • Exhibits of historical photos, artifacts and memorabilia. • Old tractors, tools, equipment and autos. • Cultural food booths featuring selections from th Punjabi Cultural Society, SBF Portuguese Hall, La Vinia Covenant Church, Bethany Lutheran Church, Kerman seniors, Kathy’s Helmuth Family Sausage and Trini’s Express Grilling. • The entertainment lineup included: Kerman Community Band, Punjabi Bhangra Folkdance, Danish Dancers and the Great Danes Band, Mar Bravo Portuguese Dancers, Fresno High Folkorico, and Kerman Middle School Band. • Old fashioned games and prizes were provided for children: carnival games, pie eating contest, sack races, relays and dunk tank. • Old fashioned rides: hayride, pony and train rides. A historical booklet highlighting stories and photos of individuals and businesses was on sale, along with a coverlet/blanket throw depicting Kerman’s past and present. |
