KERMAN (Mar. 5) - The Kerman varsity baseball season has begun. The Lions were in action this past week against three different opponents in the Immanuel tournament. This is Kerman’s first tournament until the league games begin.
On Thursday Kerman played its first game against Lindsay. Kerman won 8 to 0. Juan Montalvo pitched a complete game one hitter. He had 16 strikeouts in six innings. On Saturday Kerman had a double-header against Woodlake and Central Valley Christian (CVC). In game one the Lions rolled to a 10 to 0 victory against Woodlake. In the second game it was more the same. The Lions jumped out to a big lead and never looked back. The Lions won 12 to 0 and the game was stopped in the 5th inning because of the mercy-rule. Gabe Perez pitched a no-hitter against Woodlake. Kevin Richards also pitched a no hitter against CVC.
The Lion’s offense has been lead by seniors Jared Coleman, Gibby Gonzales, Manuel Rodrigues, Chris Briseno and juniors Vince Vital and Jacob Verwey. Kerman is now 3 and 0 and will play against Immanuel in Reedley on Tuesday. Kerman’s next game in the tournament is Saturday in Kingsburg against McFarland. If the Lions win both games they will play in the championship game at Reedley College on Saturday evening.

Eagles Win West Sierra League Championship
FIREBAUGH (Feb. 14) - The high flying Firebaugh High Eagles overcame a mid season slump to finish strong, winning their first WSL soccer title in 12 years. The team finished with a league record of 10-2-2 defeating Tranquillity 2-1 and Mendota 3-0 on their final two games of the regular season to seal the championship.
“This is a very strong team, very close friends that care for each other. They work hard, never complain, and are dependable,” said Pete Martinez. From the start of the season the team set out to win The WSL and make a statement in the playoffs. The Eagles began to show signs of dominance and resolve after placing second at the Fowler tournament defeating Kingsburg 1-0 in the semifinals and losing only to this years division four number one seed Kerman. At the Corcoran tournament the team came back with a third place finish defeating Corcoran and Buchanan. “It is very rewarding to win a championship, however the best reward comes when you see these young men become good sons, good students and productive citizens," he said.
Next up for the Eagles are the playoffs. As the number two seed in division five, the team will have a home game this Thursday against the winner between McFarland and Riverdale and possibly next Tuesday should the eagles advance. Games are set for 6:00 rain or shine.
