LADY LIONS TAKE DIVISION TITLE

The Kerman High School Varsity Girls Tennis Team, under the direction of Head Coach Elmer Huter, recently earned the CIF Central Section Division #4 Valley Championship. Kerman defeated Immanuel High School, the defending champion, 5-4 to capture the Team Championship. The Lions used a strong singles line-up to take a 4-2 advantage before winning one of three doubles matches to secure the victory. Kerman High School was the first public high school to win the tennis team championship since 1989.

Kerman finished the year as undefeated North Sequoia League Champions with a 14-0 record and 21-1 overall record. The Lions have won the North Sequoia League the past four years. Kerman participated in the Clovis Peachtree Tennis Tournament this year and took first place in their division. The Lions were led by Seniors Guiliana Huter, Mandy Porto, Rebecca ‘Qurdine, Erica Sanchez, Judith Hock and Shannon Aulakh; along with Stacy Marine, Caitlan Rogers and Perla Montalvo.

The Kerman High School tennis team would like to thank the KUSD and the KHS Administration for their support. We would also like to thank all those responsible for improving the tennis facility the past couple of years; making it one of the best around!

LIONS KNOCKED OUT OF PLAYOFFS

Nov. 28 - The Kerman Lions were in action last Friday against the Immanuel Eagles. Immanuel was the #1 seed in the North Sequoia League playoffs.

In the first quarter neither team could score. At the beginning of the second quarter Immanuel scored first on a 1 yard run. Kerman got the ball next and put a good drive together. The drive was capped off by a 15 yard touchdown pass to Jared Coleman.

Neither team was able to put another drive together and ended at halftime with the 6 to 6 score. Immanuel received the ball first in the second half. Immanuel completed some big plays and scored on 1 yard run.

On Kerman’s next possession the Lions were forced to punt the ball. Immanuel received good field position and took advantage of it. The Eagles scored on a 16 yard pass to close out the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter the score was 20 to 6.

In the fourth quarter Kerman could not move the ball and Immanuel added another score. The final score to the game was 27 to 6. The Lions season came to end with this contest. The Lions did make it into the second round of the Division IV playoffs and look forward towards the 2006 season with players moving up from an undefeated Junior Varsity squad.

The Lions ended the season with a 6-6 record. Coach Guizar and the varsity players would like to thank the fans and player’s parents for their supporter of this year’s team.

Lions Win in First Playoff

The Lions were in action Nov. 18 against Wasco in the quarter finals. Kerman was the 8th seed and Wasco was the 9th seed in the Division 4 playoffs.

The Lions started the game on defense and forced Wasco to punt. The Lions received good field position and drove within Wasco’s 25 yard line. The Lions tried to throw a screen-pass, but it was picked off by a Wasco defender. On third down the Lion’s defense forced a Wasco fumble. David Silva picked it up and ran 35 yards for touchdown.

On Wasco’s next offensive possession they were again forced to punt. Wasco’s punt was taken by Adrian Ruiz who outraced Wasco defenders and scored a 64 yard touchdown. At the end of the quarter it was Kerman 14 to 0.

On Kerman’s next offensive drive Gibby Gonzales threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Manuel Rodrigues to end the first half. At halftime the score was Kerman 20 to 0.

Kerman opened up the third quarter with the ball. The Lions weren’t able to move the ball and punted to Wasco. Wasco put some plays together and scored on a 5 yard run to end the third quarter. In the fourth quarter neither team could score and Kerman finished the game with a 20 to 7 victory. Kerman will be in action next Friday at #1 seed Immanuel in Reedley.

MENDOTA COBRAS TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP
 
MENDOTA, Nov. 16 - The Senior (12 to 14 year olds) Mendota Cobras won the Tri County Championship in Kerman on Nov. 12. A 16 to 14 victory over Yosemite clinched the title for the Cobras. After winning their division title on Oct. 29 the Cobras went on to win playoff games against Dos Palos and Washington Union. This is the first Tri County Championship for the Mendota Cobras, who are sponsored by Westside Youth Center in Mendota. The Cobras are coached by Nick Daniel, head coach, and assistant coaches; Jesus Cardenas, Frank Andrade, Mike Daniel, Adrian Perez and Jose Lopez. All the coaches are former Cobra players.


LIONS DEFEAT SIERRA ON SENIOR NIGHT

            KERMAN, Nov. 7 - The Kerman Lions were in action last Friday against Sierra on senior night. Before the football game the Kerman Lion seniors were honored by their family and coaches for their hard work. After the ceremony the game got under way. Sierra got the ball first and scored on their third play of scrimmage on a 54 yard pass. The Lions offense came back with some big running and passing plays. The drive was capped off with a Juan Ramirez 3 yard run to tie the game. The Lions defense forced Sierra to punt on a three and out and received good field position. The Lions pushed Sierra’s defense back and got within their 15 yard line. On a third down Gibby Gonzales threw a pass that was deflected in the end-zone, but was caught by Jared Coleman for a 12 yard touchdown. The Lions took a 14 to 7 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter Sierra drove the ball within the Lion’s 20 yard line, but were forced to try a field-goal. The field goal was no good and the Lions took possession of the ball. The Lions couldn’t put a drive together, but held Sierra’s offense to zero points in the quarter. At halftime it was 14 to 7. The Lions received the ball in the second half, but Sierra forced a fumble on the kickoff and scored a couple plays later on a 2 yard run. The Lions got the ball next, but were forced to punt. Sierra got the ball and tried to pass on the Lion’s defense. Sierra tried to throw a screen, but Manuel Rodrigues read it all the way and intercepted it for a 33 yard touchdown. On Sierra’s next offensive drive the quarterback was sacked and lost the football. Eric Flores picked the ball up and ran 51 yards for a touchdown. On Sierra’s next possession the quarterback tried to throw a pass, but was deflected by a Kerman lineman. Ruben Rodrigues intercepted the tipped pass and scored on a 31 yard touchdown. The Lions scored on back to back to back Sierra turnovers. Sierra got the ball again, but was forced to punt. On the Lion’s next possession Gibby Gonzales threw a 65 yard pass to Manuel Rodrigues for a touchdown. Sierra came back and scored on a 53 yard pass. The Lions got the ball next and ran a lot of time off the clock. The Lions finally scored on a 35 yard pass from Gonzales to Jared Coleman to finish the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter Kerman led 46 to 21. Sierra scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make it look respectable, but for the most part it was a Lion’s blowout. The final score was 46 to 35 and runs Kerman’s season record to 5 wins and 4 losses. The Lions will be in action next week at Washington Union in Easton for their last regular-season game.

AZTECS DEFEAT FRESNO CHRISTIAN

MENDOTA, Nov. 2 - Mendota High football improved to 5-3 after a 27-13 victory over Fresno Christian. It was Homecoming for the Aztecs, and Homecoming King Ray Arroyo did not disappoint, amassing 177 yards on 21 carries, and a touchdown.

Joseph Villar added a one yard rushing TD and Abel Abarca capped the scoring for Mendota with two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving.

Mendota's defense was very stingy, allowing the Eagles only 12 offensive plays from scrimmage in the first half, allowing the Aztecs offense to orchestrate three time-consuming drives.

Mendota held a 27-6 lead at halftime and cruised through the second half. The Aztecs wrap up the reguar season with Liberty and Firebaugh.


LADY 'TECS DEFEAT TIGERS

MENDOTA, Nov. 2 - Thursday night the Mendota Aztecs took the long trip to Tranquillity to play the Tigers. After being down two games the Lady Aztecs rallied to win the next three games, 25-20, 25-21, 15-11.

The Aztecs were led by sophomore sisters Crystal Ramire with 12 kills, and Jackie Alvarez with 10 kills. Other leaders were sophomore Angela Riofrio with seven aces and senior setter Denise Fuentes with 34 assists.

On Nov. 3 the Aztecs will take on the Eagles from Fresno Christian and the Blue Raiders of Caruthers. Come out and support the team Thursday evening, at 5:30, against Caruthers.


Lions Lose Tough Game Against Dos Palos

KERMAN, Nov. 2 - The Kerman Lions were in action Friday against Dos Palos on the home field.

The Lions began the game on defense and forced the Broncos to throw an interception that was picked off by David Silva. The Lions couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and gave the ball back. Dos Palos put an offensive drive together and scored on a 29 yard field goal before the end of the first quarter.

The Lions got the ball back in the second quarter, but again were forced to punt the ball. Dos Palos put another drive together and scored a touchdown before the end of the half. At half it was 10 to 0 in favor of Dos Palos.

The Lions received the ball first in the second half and didn’t waste any time to score. On the first play Juan Ramirez found an opening up the middle and scored on an 81 yard run. The Lions converted on the extra point and the score was 10 to 7.

Dos Palos got the ball next, but the Lion’s defense didn’t allow them to move the ball. Dos Palos punted and the Lions got good field position. The Lions couldn’t put a drive together and at the end of the fourth quarter it was 10 to 7.

The Lions started the fourth quarter with the ball in good field position. The Lions offense was running a spread offense with four wide receivers. The Lions put some big running plays together and got within Dos Palos 20 yard line. The Lions were close to scoring, but a pass was deflected and picked off in the end-zone. Dos Palos got the ball back, but were forced to punt.

The Lions again got the ball in good field position. The Lions put some plays together and got within the 10 yard line. The Lions couldn’t get any closer and with 1:35 on the game clock went for a field goal. The Lions missed the field goal and Dos Palos ran the clock out. The final score was 10 to 7.

Juan Ramirez had 173 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Manuel Rodrigues had 3 catches for 76 yards. The Lions defense played exceptional allowing only 10 points and not allowing a single score in the second half. The Lions will be in action next week against Sierra at home.

FALCON CHEER TEAM TAKES HONORS

TRANQUILLITY, Oct. 30 - The Tri-County League held its annual cheer/dance competition Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Tranquillity High School gym. The senior team had an amazing, show-stopping performance in both categories. A standing room only crowd witnessed a near perfect routine as the local girls danced away with top honors in the small school division.
